I have new HP pc.- Vista. progms pro- installed.I can't back up files ,back up failed what is the matter?

i tried bcking up on CD, and i tried creating a restore point(won't do that ither)i am afraid to stop some programs from running as i am ignorant of this computering. i surf the net, play music, do e-mails print, and do pictures other than that i am still self-educating., it over whelms me. is there a informed understanding, and kind person that will attempt to help me. thank you in advance.
