Would it be possible to trace this person?

If a person had some sort of handheld device like a DS... for the sake of portability, I guess. And then this person spoofed the MAC address of the device, went to another state, connected to a random unprotected WiFi network which belong to someone, and then does whatever. Would it be at all possible to trace this person?
