How many old people in the UK are living in institutional care?

im not sure exactly because due to the government white paper "valuing people" (which was published in march 2001) local autorities are closing down institutionalised care units and introducing supported living services. So i think that it will be still quite a few years yet until it has disappeared, but the numbers are rapidly decreasing
