Scalloped Potatoes Disaster - Advice please?

I am a huge fan of scalloped potatoes, but am noo good at making them myself. Does anyone have a fool proof recipe for me that is absolutely impossible to muck up, and maybe some tips on how i can get the potatoes cooked evenly within the timeframe of the recipe? last time i cooked these i went 2 HOURS over the recipe time hehe.
